This project involved transforming a previously underused and run-down section of the client’s property into a bright and modern living space that connects seamlessly with the garden.
The client wanted to open up the front elevation of the building and introduce large sliding doors that would create a stronger connection between the interior living space and the outdoor decking area. The aim was to create a more open and inviting room while bringing in natural light and improving the overall usability of the space.
To achieve the client’s vision, we worked closely with both an architect and a structural engineer to develop a design that would allow the space to be opened up while maintaining the structural integrity of the property.
This collaborative approach ensured the structural alterations were carefully planned, with the correct structural calculations and supports specified before construction began.
The project required significant structural modifications to the existing building.
The existing walls forming the front elevation were carefully removed, with temporary structural supports installed to safely support the building while the new openings were formed.
One elevation of the space was rebuilt as a new solid cavity wall, improving both the thermal performance and the structural integrity of the property.
To create the large openings required for the sliding doors, two structural steel beams were installed. These beams were supported on a corner post, allowing the formation of two large openings across the front elevation.
This structural arrangement made it possible to install wide sliding doors while maintaining the necessary structural support to the building above.
To complement the modern design of the space, the exterior of the building was finished with Douglas fir timber cladding. This natural timber finish provides both durability and a high-quality appearance, helping the extension blend well with the surrounding garden environment while adding warmth and character to the exterior.
The new sliding doors open directly onto a decked area, helping to create a strong connection between the internal living space and the outdoor area.
Following the structural works, the interior of the room was fully upgraded to create a comfortable and modern living space.
The works included:
These improvements helped transform the space into a bright, open and welcoming room that integrates well with the rest of the property.
The completed space now feels significantly larger, brighter and far more connected to the surrounding garden. The large sliding doors allow natural light to flood the room while providing direct access to the outdoor decking area.
By combining structural alterations, modern glazing and high-quality finishes, the project successfully transformed an underused part of the property into a modern and functional living space that blends indoor and outdoor living.
